Worship
Last night I had the pleasure of attending a new church plant in town called Great Oak Church. They began the service with a time of prayer followed by a time of worship in song led by a team consisting of a lead singer, several guitarists and a percussionist. I was certainly blessed that night as we sang some of my personal favorites such as “Refiners Fire” and “Change My Heart.” Concerning the music, it was low key, reverent, and such that anyone participating would have be blessed.
Sermon
The message that evening came from the second chapter of Acts. Teaching verse by verse, Pastor Gene had us read the text, then explained its meaning, its theological significance, and then wrapped up the lesson with a congregational challenge to action. It was quite refreshing in our days of gimmick preaching to simply hear a preacher expound the Word without trying to sell something or turn it into another reason why the rapture is just around the corner. I can say this, if someone is looking for sound biblical teaching, they will find it under Pastor Gene.
General Observations
Overall, my experience was very enjoyable. One thing to keep in mind is as a church plant, Great Oak is still in its infancy. As a congregation of fewer than 50 in number, do not expect to find all the frills of one of the local mega-churches. You will find, however, friendly folks, a comfortable facility with room to grow, a solid commitment to the Word of God and the opportunity to serve Christ in a growing community of believers. I recommend Great Oak, especially if you are looking for a church in which you can grow as it grows.
